Wire Rope with Complex Cross Sections

Publication: Journal of Engineering Mechanics
Volume 110, Issue 3

Abstract

A theory is developed to predict the static response of a wire rope with complex cross sections. The solutions of the nonlinear equations of equilibrium are linearized, and the results are applied to a 6×19 Seale rope with an independent wire rope core. The linearization permits a considerable simplification in the theory so that the results can readily be applied to other types of cross sections. Expressions are presented for the stresses in the rope, and the maximum tensile stress is also determined. A load‐deformation curve of a Seale rope is obtained experimentally, and the results are compared with the theory.
