Abstract
A sheet of elastic material, lying on the ground is lifted from one edge by a vertical force F. The nonlinear heavy elastica equations for large deflections are solved by perturbation method for small F and exact numerical integration for general F. An asymptotic solution for large F is also found. The results can be applied to the design and lifting of heavy elastic sheets, such as carpeting and sheet metal, as well as to the design and lifting of heavy beams, rods, and cables.
