Knowledge-Driven ANP Approach to Vendors Evaluation for Sustainable Construction
Publication: Journal of Construction Engineering and Management
Volume 134, Issue 12
Abstract
This paper presents a multicriteria decision-making approach to evaluate contractor candidates in the open competition of construction project procurement by means of a knowledge-framed analytic network process (KANP), which embeds a construction knowledge framework into a formal analytic network process procedure. An applied KANP model named KANP.BID is set up and used in an experimental case study. The paper concludes that the KANP.BID model is a viable and capable tool for selecting the most appropriate tender alternative under criteria of sustainable construction. It is expected that the proposed KANP.BID model can attract interest from both practitioners and researchers in terms of further research and development.

Acknowledgments
Several people have provided helpful comments on portions of the manuscript at various stages. In particular, the writers would like to acknowledge Dr. Lu Aye from the University of Melbourne, reviewers nominated by the journal, and the journal editors for their time and effort in reviewing the manuscripts and providing valuable technical comments. Their informed comments motivated several refinements and improvements. Meanwhile, the writers would also like to acknowledge Professor Colin Gray and the School of Construction Management and Engineering at the University of Reading for providing the valuable work done by PBSRG at Arizona State University (Kashiwagi 2004). The first writer would also like to acknowledge a number of colleagues and friends in the Department of Building and Real Estate and other departments at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Institute of Technology and Engineering at Massey University, and the School of Construction Management and Engineering and other departments at the University of Reading for their warm-hearted help, especially during the period of preparing this paper; without their support, this paper could not have been finished. The development of PairWiser tool for the ANP accom-panies a research project funded by the United Kingdom government Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) under the Sustainable Urban Environment (SUE) program. The title of the research project is Innovation in Design, Construction & Operation of Buildings for People (IDCOP) (Grant Reference No. UNSPECIFIEDGR/T04878/01). Investigators are Professor A. S. Bahaj from the University of Southampton, Professor Derek J. Clements-Croome and Professor Kecheng Liu from the University of Reading, and Professor Keith Jones from the University of Greenwich. Dr. Godfaurd John and Mr. Hsieh-Min Loy put their effort into preparing a part of the IDCOP research proposal. The Arup in London provided financial support and technical review throughout the IDCOP project. Special thanks go to Professor Thomas L. Saaty from the University of Pittsburgh for his comments to the PairWiser. Special thanks also go to Professor Derek J. Clements-Croome for initiating the Workshop on Multi-Criteria Decision Making for the Sustainable Built Environment, which was held on March 21, 2006 at the University of Reading and his support for the research into multicriteria decision making.
