Volume 133, Issue 3
It is a great honor to be selected as the Editor for the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management. My colleague at Iowa State University, Dr. Edward Jaselskis, and many others have assembled a great team transforming the Journal from a bimonthly with a small editorial team to a monthly with more than 30 specialty editors; this transformation has been exciting to watch from my position as Associate Editor of this journal. This legacy is a great one, so thank you, Ed! He has also spent considerable time sharing his insights about the journal with me, which will greatly help with the transition.
The operation of the journal has required a collective vision—and also the effort of keeping track of details and doing myriad small things quickly and correctly. The Journal’s success reflects well on all our team members, including ASCE production staff, editors, reviewers, and authors. So, thanks to all of you.
Jesus M. de la Garza of Virginia Tech was nominated by the search committee as our new Associate Editor. He has accepted my enthusiastic invitation with equal enthusiasm. Please welcome him to our team. As of this writing we are consulting together to develop a plan of action to complete our transition.
During my term as Editor, our focus will be in three areas:
Improving the speed and consistency of reviews to maintain our leadership position as an archival journal in the construction engineering area. This will include recruiting more reviewers, coordinating activities among specialty editors, and transitioning from the current e-room to a new Web-based system that ASCE is implementing.
Exploiting the unrealized potential of the Journal as an effective forum for engaging practicing designers and constructors in dialogue about research and educational needs with the academy.
Helping potential and new faculty members connect with resources that are critical for their success: good research topics, mentoring, and exposure.
With regard to the first focus area listed, I would like to extend an invitation to our readers to become reviewers for the Journal. As a reviewer, you will have an opportunity to read about the latest research in construction engineering and management before it is published and have a part in shaping the future of academic and professional discourse in this area. Specialty editors will work with you to send two to six manuscripts per year in your area of interest. Reviewers are recognized on an annual basis in this journal, and it is an effective means of developing professional contacts. I would encourage all interested reviewers to contact me at ⟨[email protected]⟩.
I am looking forward to working with all stakeholders to take the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management to the next level!
