Abstract
The College of Engineering at Wayne State University has recently instituted two new educational programs designed for the practicing hazardous‐waste professional. Each program draws heavily on the expertise of civil, chemical, and industrial engineering and occupational health in addition to related scientific areas. The graduate certificate in hazardous‐waste management is a program of 13 semester hours providing supplementary training in environmental control technology, laws, and policies related to the management or regulation of corporate hazardous materials programs. The master of science program in hazardous waste management provides greater coverage of the topics introduced in the certificate program, with additional technical components. The unique aspect of these programs is that they successfully combine courses from distinct departments of the university to provide the broad coverage needed by the hazardous‐waste professional. Students graduating from these programs are in high demand. A description of the programs, a profile of the student body, and experience with three years of the certificate program are presented.
