Digital Twin Applications for Building Energy and Carbon Performance

Abstract
The initial application of digital twins (DT) in the construction industry was to upgrade construction and design methods by integrating the Building Information Modeling-based platforms and cooperation model. This chapter intends to investigate the use of DT technologies in intelligent building management to provide insights into the transformative potential of DT. It establishes a bottom-up conceptual framework for DT deployment in building projects, along with illustrative case studies. The chapter discusses the connection between facility management demands and technological advancements. A campus building project is illustrated to compare the life-cycle energy and carbon performance of a conventional building and a smart building with Internet of Things (IoT) in the United Kingdom. The chapter also presents an illustrative case study approach to examine DT adoption in the architectural, engineering, and construction industries while focusing on how DT were utilized in building maintenance and operations.
