Experimental Study on the Uniaxial Dynamic Tensile Damage of Concrete
Publication: Earth & Space 2008: Engineering, Science, Construction, and Operations in Challenging Environments
Abstract
Dynamic direct tensile damage tests of plain concrete specimens are carried out on MTS in order to investigate the effect of strain rate on dynamic damage behaviors of concrete. About forty dumbbell shape specimens were tested in tension with the axial strain rate range from 10–5/s to 10–1/s. With the damage of concrete denoted by the reduction of tangent modulus, damage evolution of different strain rates are studied systematically. Results show that the inner cracks of concrete expand slowly and the number of cracks decreases when the strain rate increases. The damage threshold stress of concrete increases with increasing of the strain rate. Also, the effect of strain rate on other dynamic behaviors of concrete was studied. The tensile strength and critical strain of concrete increase with the strain rate and the relationships can be simplied approximately linear with the logarithm of strain rate. The poisson's ratio of concrete is independent on the strain rate.
