Electrokinetic Migration of Nickel [Ni(II)] in Contaminated Sludge
Publication: Journal of Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste

Abstract
Nickel sludge was synthetically prepared by adding an optimum dose of lime into nickel rinse wastewater. Migration of ions through contaminated sludge and its accumulation near cathode were studied under varying applied voltages in a laboratory scale electrochemical cell. The result showed more than two times an increase in concentration from an initial concentration of at a normalized distance of 80% from anode in 14 hr of migration study, when the applied voltage was 25 V. On the other hand, nickel concentration was reduced to of sludge at normalized distance of 20% from the anode. With the increase in voltage, the migration rate of metals within sludge was increased. Change in pH with time and under various experimental conditions was also studied.
