Diffusion of Bluff Wall Jets in Finite Depth Tailwater

Publication: Journal of Hydraulic Engineering
Volume 109, Issue 11

Abstract

Based on the results of an experimental study on the diffusion of bluff turbulent wall jets in finite depth tailwater in a wide channel, it has been found that the transverse expansion of the jet depends strongly on the ratio of the tailwater depth yt to the jet thickness or diameter yo. For large values of yt/yo the potential core is followed by an axisymmetric‐type decay regions whereas for yt/yo of the order of unity, the potential core is followed by a plane jet‐type decay region. The velocity profiles in the central plane as well as in the transverse direction have been found to be similar with the growth rate of the length scales depending strongly on the ratio yt/yo. Some observations have also been made on the erosion caused by bluff wall jets with yt/yo approximately equal to unity.
