Transmission lines are one of the most important types of infrastructure, as they are responsible for transferring electrical energy from the power generation facility to the customer. Historically, numerous transmission towers collapsed under extreme loading conditions during events such as tornadoes, hurricanes, ice storms and earthquakes, leading to widespread power blackouts. In the past decade, structural safety assessments of transmission lines have been developed and refined. On the one hand, this process involves the refinement of the structural model, which can include the application of large finite element software systems, the consideration of joint effect, and the development of multi- scale technology; on the other hand, it also involves the refinement of the load model, which can include the development of a practical typhoon field model, the development of wind and rain load models, and the measurement of aerodynamic properties. In addition, some structural health monitoring systems have been installed on transmission towers in order to aid in the assessment of the structural states. The special collection on “Structural Safety Assessment of Transmission Line under Extreme Loading Conditions” calls for high-quality unpublished research work and aims to cover recent advances related to models for assessing the structural safety of this type of infrastructure.
