Waterways all over the world are experiencing increased cargo loads, and this has led to a large body of engineering and research work to expand the waterways in order to accommodate increased numbers and sizes of vessels. Recent examples of these waterway expansion (widening and deepening) include Mississippi River, Houston-Galveston, Mobile, Savannah, Rotterdam, Miami, and others. Earlier examples include the Missouri River and Tenn-Tom Waterway shallow draft channels. This special issue presents a sampling of engineering and scientific work that has been and is being conducted on major waterways of the world.
