With the emergence and growing prominence of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), and robotics, off-site construction is gaining momentum as a promising solution for achieving productivity and safety improvement, reducing waste, and addressing labor shortages in the construction industry. However, there are many technological, managerial, and organizational challenges across the project life cycle that are brought to bear in the implementation of off-site construction. In promoting off-site construction and maximizing its benefits in the industry, this special collection aims to provide an outstanding collection of both research- and practice-oriented papers that not only tackle the emerging challenges in the off-site construction field but also emphasize the importance of both theoretical and applied research. The research efforts described in this collection will bring innovations to the off-site construction domain and further promote the deployment of next-gen off-site construction. A wide range of topics related to modular construction/off-site construction is included, but not limited to, 1) Technological: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Analytics, Additive Manufacturing and Industry 4.0, Automation and Robotics, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Digital Project Delivery; 2) Managerial: Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA), Supply Chain Management, Safety Management, Work Improvement across the Project Life Cycle (e.g., process improvement), Lean Manufacturing, Quality Management and Control, and Risk Management; and 3) Organizational: Industrialization-oriented Project Delivery Systems, Organizational Challenges in Project Management, Codes, and Regulations.
