Evaluation of Soil Improvement Surrounding Drilled Displacement Piles Installed in Homogeneous Cohesionless Soil Sites through Pre- and Post-Installation CPT Data

ABSTRACT

Pre- and post-pile installation soil properties surrounding newly installed drilled displacement piles (DDPs) in sands were evaluated by interrogating cone penetration tests (CPT) performed before (CPTPRE) and after (CPTPOST) pile construction. CPT raw measurements, that is, tip resistance (qc), sleeve friction (fs), and excess pore water pressure (u2), were used to quantify the change in soil resistance. The main parameters influencing the soil resistance improvement were identified as follows: the degree of confinement (depth), the soil resistance prior to the DDP installation (qc.pre), and the pile arrangement and distance between the DDP and the location where the improvement is being assessed. Furthermore, the change in soil behavior was evaluated via Robertson’s normalized CPT soil behavior type (SBTn) chart along with the fines content (FC). The results showed that clean sands, with low FC improved slightly more than sands with noticeable FC (30%−40%) when the soil is in a dilative state prior to the pile installation.
